The village center in Kappl, Tyrol, Austria includes three separate structures forming a U shape. The total area of all three components is 911,118 ft³ and includes a café, retail shops, and visitors' center, as well as a large multipurpose hall.
The goal was to design a spiral staircase with glass steps and railings spanning 2 floors. With sophisticated anchoring details and helical stringers created from subtle rectangular hollow sections, a light and elegant staircase was formed. The unique timber and steel airship structure was named “Gulliver” and, just like the early zeppelins, it represents both the eternal human desire to fly, and a certain utopian ideal. Gulliver will serve as space for literary events related to the themes of DOX’s exhibitions. These exhibitions are characterized by critical reflection on the situation of our contemporary world.
